Food insecurity, defined as the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, is a pressing issue in the United States. Children are particularly vulnerable, and the prevalence among them is concerning.

 USDA statistics from 2021 highlight the need for interventions:

  • 10.2 percent (13.5 million households) were food insecure (those with low or very low food security) and had difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members because of a lack of resources.
  • 3.8 percent of U.S. households (5.1 million households) had very low food security. In this more severe range of food insecurity, the food intake of some household members was reduced, and normal eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year because of limited resources.[1]

An organization in Muncie, Indiana, however, is making a difference in the lives of local children, literally “from the inside out!”  Inside Out was formed in 2011 by the founders of BNF Ministries, Bob and Stacy Ball, who wanted to expand upon their work of compassion by moving communities towards empowerment – through healthy food.

Inside Out partners with community organizations that serve food-insecure children by providing nutritious meals and wholesome snacks for their program participants.  Many times, children in these programs do not receive adequate or consistent meals at home.

Inside Out states that “change starts from the inside out, and when children are fed healthy food consistently, they are better equipped to succeed. We believe that this will create a ripple effect that is beneficial for the children, their families, and the community as a whole.”[2]

By using fresh, nutritious ingredients such as quality proteins, fresh produce, and whole grains, they create delicious hot meals and snacks that are hand-crafted in-house and based on a cycle menu using USDA nutritional requirements.

But it doesn’t stop there.  Inside Out doesn’t just prepare the food – they source, produce, rescue, preserve, and distribute the food to partner organizations, while empowering youth and adults with training in culinary arts, food production, life skills, and supportive relationships.

Inside Out believes its actions empower its vision:

  • To see their community rise above food insecurity;
  • To be a compassionate, empowering, innovative leader in creating a healthy, locally sourced and sustainable food culture that is accessible to all; and
  • To increasingly source food locally and develop their own food production capacity.

Indiana Trust Wealth Management wishes to congratulate Bob Ball, Founding Executive Director, as well as his staff and volunteers for leading the charge at Inside Out by partnering with agencies and organizations throughout the area to feed the area's hungry children and transform our community – from the inside out!

About the Indiana Trust Nonprofit Spotlight Program

 Indiana Trust Wealth Management launched the Indiana Trust Nonprofit Spotlight program initiative in January 2021, which consists of recognizing, rewarding, and promoting a nonprofit organization in one or more of the company’s footprint areas on a monthly basis, as a way to highlight various nonprofit organizations throughout the year and bring attention to the good work being done in the communities they serve. Under the Nonprofit Spotlight initiative, the nonprofit organization will receive a $1,000 corporate donation and be eligible for employee gift-matching throughout the year. David R. Kibbe, JD, President & CEO, states, “As a majority employee-owned company, matching our employees’ contributions is an opportunity for Indiana Trust to support those nonprofits whose missions connect with our employees."
